She transferred to XTO's Pittsburgh office in August 2011 to serve as the public and government affairs manager for the states of New York\, Pennsylvania\, New York and West Virginia. Before joining ExxonMobil\, Karen was the media relations director for the American Petroleum Institute in Washington DC. She grew up in eastern Ohio and graduated with a communications degree\, summa cum laude\, from Bethany College in West Virginia.
